Foundations- Foreground Middleground Background

We will continue building our pen and ink skills by introducing brush and crow quill pens to apply ink with in this project.

Begin by finding three photo references of any three different objects you choose. ( no text on them, no paintings or drawings)
Choose a theme that interests you.
Place one object in the foreground (so close to the viewer that you can not see the entire objext because it is bleeding off the page)
Place one object in the middleground  (in the middle of the picture plane where it could be a few yards from the viewer)
Place the third object in the background (where it is extremely far from the viewer and significant distance from the middleground.)

Consider overlapping objects so that it adds to the illusion of depth.

Create at least 3 different thumbnail sketches to organize your thoughts about how you are going to arrange your three elements on the page to make an interesting composition.  Make sure each one is a unique thought, do not repeat the same thing three times.

After you get a sketch approved you can will move on to the bristol board where you will begin with basic shapes, center line, construction lines as always and create a finished pencil drawing before adding ink.  When you are drawing you objects make sure to consider a light source so that you can create values using hatching, crosshatching, and stippling.

Be certain that you have taken a careful look at M.C. Escher : His Life and Complete Graphic work book before before completing the pencil stage of your work and moving on to the inks.

Once pencil drawings are complete (or close to complete) there will be demonstrations of both brushes and crow quill pens as well as stippling techniques.

Composition- The arrangement of elements on the page

Thumbnail sketch- A miniature version of what your finished work will look like that allows you to figure out how you will arrange your elements on the page.

Stippling- Using small marks to create values
