Some finished art!

Here is the completed image for my podcast!  Would you wear a t-shirt with this design?  Constructive criticism?  I'm open to it.

High school classes, watch the blog for announcements for Google Meet times.

If you have not been sending pictures of your work please get caught up as they are going to start piling up.  Administration will be notifying you of the new remote learning policies and expectations so please read it carefully!

Foundations/Design/Advanced Art- Create An Ad work continuing (week of 3/30-4/3)

I have seen very few students' work up to this point.  Again, the expectations are that you are checking in to the blog every week and putting in 2 hours of work for this class EVERY week.  Email  images of your progress each week.  administration will be sending an email next week on the updated expectations and accountability.

This week, keep developing your work and you should have at least 3 different sketches up to this point and since this is your third week or working for 2 hours per week I expect to see more in-depth sketches. (re-read past Foundations posts to make sure you understand the assignment) I will give you feedback when I receive your sketches, please develop your ideas keeping the feedback in mind.

Some specific areas to focus on this week:
Choose at least two different fonts that you could use to include in your ad.  We can NOT cut and paste them on to the finish if you print them out, but we could trace them on to the page so consider that.  Sloppy handwritten text will not be acceptable.

Think about including the following elements in your ad:

A headline which can be a short sentence or even a few words that grab the reader's attention and make them want to read the ad.

Illustration should not be of any property that you do not own (Batman, Hello Kitty etc...) but can be inspired by or based on.

Body copy- information about the business.  <aybe something like "Come to Acme Hardware for..."

White space- it is important for the ad not to look cluttered so consider leaving open areas to help guide the viewer's eye and make it easy to read.

Signature- name, address, email, website telling the reader where to find the business.  We will get more in-depth with the specific information as soon as I hear back from the Gazette with deadline information.  Please make sure you leave space for this information in the meantime.  It often can be on the bottom of the page, most likely smaller than your headline.

Final tip: If you like the business logo, keep in mind you can trace it and do not have to hand draw it. No tracing or copying other people's artwork though.

DESIGN and ADVANCED ART (week of 3/30-4/3)

I have seen some great work as we move forward on these Create An Ad designs.  We are going to add an element of design to your work, a border.  The border does not have to be complete around all four edges, it can be just in the corners or even partial edges.  Think about ways that the border can enhance your message.  Do not make the borders generic.
For example, if you have a bank, maybe the border could be made of dollar bills.  If your ad if for a store that has a strong logo, maybe that could be in the four corners.

Your assignment for this week is to come up with a minimum of three different ideas of how the border can become an active part of your design.  Continue developing your ideas for the ad itself as well.  Keep in mind you should be spending 3 hours a week on this class,

The Volvo ad in this link is a great example:

https://view.publitas.com/p222-4389/create-an-ad-2017/page/20-21

If it is helpful, to do a Google Meet I am happy to make it happen.  Maybe Thursday at noon? Please comment to the post if you would like to do that or if you have questions/concerns.

I am still waiting to hear back from the Gazette regarding a deadline etc... so I will share as soon as I hear back.

All Middle School Exploratory for the week of 3/30-4/3

hi everyone!  I hope everyone is doing well at home!  Every week will be doing a half hour's worth of work to keep up our skills.  Please remember every drawing should always be done with the same process we have used since day one with basic shapes, center line, construction lines etc...

As we discussed on day one, make sure if you do not see your class on the first page, you scroll to the bottom and click "older posts".

Draw any three objects from observation. (no text on them)  They must be overlapping one another.  This will be part one of two, so focus on structure only.  No values, or details unless you are completly satisfied with the work.  Look carefully at how the objects relate to each other in terms of height and width and their placement in relation to each other.

Email or comment on this post with questions.  Please email a picture of your work when complete.

Ceramics- Untraditional Tiles (week of 3/30-4/3)

Students will create ONE set of 4 tiles that have a unified theme but work as individual piecess of art as well as a whole.  The shapes of each tile must be untraditional in the sense that they will not be simple squares or rectangles.  Examples are included in links at the bottom of this post..  Do NOT make one piece and slice it into four.  Each tile must be a minimum of 5" x 5".(if we get back to school in May we will build these from the sketches)
Please avoid putting an object in the center of a random shape, think about creative ways you could break the border of a shape.

Begin by choosing a theme and sketching your ideas as always.  For example, if your theme is music, each of the tiles could be a different instrument that fit together in a creative way and can all be different sizes/shapes as long as they have visual qualities that unite them.

Each piece will be approached with a relief technique meaning that there will be several layers of depth.  You will need to both cut into the clay and build up the surface of the clay to create several planes.
Choose a subject that is meaningful to you, work hard and have fun!

Unity- Sense of wholeness in a work of art achieved through effective use of elements and principles of art.  Unity utilizes proximity, repetition and simplicity.

Relief-  Relief sculpture is any work which projects from but which belongs to the wall, or other type of background surface, on which it is carved. Reliefs are traditionally classified according to how high the figures project from the background. Also known as relievo, relief sculpture is a combination of the two-dimensional pictorial arts and the three-dimensional sculptural arts. Thus a relief, like a picture, is dependent on a background surface and its composition must be extended in a plane in order to be visible. Yet at the same time a relief also has a degree of real three-dimensionality, just like a proper sculpture.

ALL STUDENTS- please read and respond with a comment below

I attended a webinar and liked some of the ideas for both 2D and 3D art exercises.  These may be helpful projects to relax with, give it a shot if you see one that appeals to you.

I am thinking about setting up a table outside of Frontier with supplies if anyone would live to stop by and pick some up to work with.  If you would be interested, please comment below and let me know.  More info coming soon!

Foundations, Foundations 2, Design and Advanced Art

Please continue working on Create An Ad ideas.  You should have put two hours or so into concepts, thumbnails sketches last week, and an additional 2 this week. (Design class should be 3 hours per week) Expectations were outlined in prior posts so please go back and read them if you failed to do so.

Please email pictures to me so I can give you feedback.

I have quite a few people who did not turn in work or even check in last week so please make sure you are meeting the expectations and keeping plugging away on your work.  Comment here and email me anytime.  More details as we go forward once we establish our concepts.

Be creative and have fun!

Middle School Exploratory for the week of 3/23-3/27

hi everyone!

Take the observation drawing you did last week and add at least 5 different values using hatching and crosshatching.  Make sure the lines are parallel and well crafted.  (no scribbling or blending)
Lines can be straight, organic, or broken as long as they are parallel.  The closer together they are the darker the value.  Consider your light source when drawing so that the values are not random.

Email or comment on this post with questions.  Please email a picture of your work when complete.

hatching- create a value using a series of parallel lines

crosshatching- create several series of parallel lines intersecting one another

Are you working on any personal projects?

I hope everyone is doing well as we enter our second week away from school.  The arts can be an amazing outlet in times like this where some of us are uneasy, stressed or feeling isolated.  Are you working on any personal projects?  Drawing?  Painting?  If you feel like sharing please do!  Here is the line work to an image I am using to brand my podcast:
If you want to see the finished color image, I can share that too.  Feel free to check in here or email me anytime at jack.purcell@frsu38.org if you just want to check in, vent, have questions, etc...

Ceramics 2- Mochina Culture South America

Please read the links below and begin sketching three different concepts for pieces that we can build when we return to the classroom.  Please comment this week 3/23-3/27 and refer to the prior post, ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!!

Students will discover Peruvian work in the Moche culture from 100-800 AD and the organic nature of the work which were often used as musical instruments. Students will be introduced to using molds to create a variety of handles that they will attach to their work to represent trademark aesthetic choices of this culture. White clay will be used with a monochromatic palette of reds.(and browns, perhaps textured glazes)  There can be reasons to stray from that color palette so consider all of your options by reading and looking at the four links and exploring beyond.

Students can choose to focus on
1) Goddesses/Gods/Shamans with coils/handles integrated into the design
2) Musical instruments integrating elements of animal anatomy and coils/handles

Please read the following and outline a plan and comment on how you want to proceed with your three individual pieces (you will turn in the single piece that you feel is strongest):

Your response only needs to be a paragraph and will be done by commenting on this entry after signing in.

CERAMICS AND CERAMICS 2 SLABS

I hope you are all doing well with these unusual circumstances!  Please carefully read the post below titled ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY as well as this one.

Ceramics 2 students please look for the next project that you can read the content in the post and begin sketching your ideas using any references necessary.  Remember, the end goal is to create 3 different pieces.

Ceramics students will work on the third of the 3 basic construction techniques- slabs.
Slabs are pieces of clay that are rolled out flat.  Please watch the videos below to see some examples of how you can utilize slabs.

Our goals will be:
to create 3 different pieces using photo references for each.
Demonstrate at least 3 different textures in each. (smooth clay can count as 1)

A good example would be to create a beach scene.  You could create texture for the sand, water and a surfboard.  We can make impressions with objects, carve in texture with our tools or any other creative solutions you can come up with.

Create 3 finished sketches using the same process that we always use.
Please email me a photo of your sketches using the directions in the ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY post.  Please make sure you spend at least 2 hours working on these and make sure I get your email by Friday 3/27

Please email with questions!  Be creative and have fun!

Foundations and Foundations 2

I hope you are all doing well with these unusual circumstances!  Businesses have been assigned for Create An Ad 2020 and are listed at the bottom of this post.  The deadline will be adjusted depending on when we return to school so don't worry about that.   Please carefully read the post below titled ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Let's begin by brainstorming ideas for your business. I am asking that you spend about 2 hours generating ideas and thumbnails sketches. (no full sized ones yet) I believe this most important part of this assignment is to make it FUN, not BORING.  There are many new businesses added to the mix this year and whichever one you are assigned is the one you have to keep. (there is no trading, sorry)

Think about your favorite advertisements which you are inundated with constantly.  Maybe it is funny, it could be weird, features a mascot or character etc...

A great example is Geico.  Car insurance sounds really boring and expensive, I initially would not be excited to get an insurance business, but... look at this character who actually makes the ads funny and stand out in your mind.  Brilliant idea to use this character coupled with humor:

https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=AwrC3OvKQHJeQ1EA9jAPxQt.;_ylu=X3oDMTB0N2Noc21lBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNwaXZz?p=geico+ad&type=RVMC_80801240&hspart=Lkry&hsimp=yhs-SF01&param1=mT_FQUFLaANmE8X_M_UhhKTITWT5zt_XRUepV2iQXDsbk2giaCzAYT4KW2Pj7PIxjx2xzh-r17DKOSOQL-UDTEhXyVozf8-D7QrIwPed4ie9TT1Z6AExlH1SLOURa_B72hghQEOxclagOkr1PnDa7y1iYxO3jIm3h7Lk8IOEB1eMTPsiqCaqk-KgoH0R1G1oJIh5JJgghRrflPFo49rXQwK4ZslAutqg2ZflBvrGZ0dEsykJxUX0N9MzqqzmLA%2C%2C&ei=UTF-8&fr=yhs-Lkry-SF01&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly9zZWFyY2gueWFob28uY29tL3locy9zZWFyY2g_aHNwYXJ0PUxrcnkmaHNpbXA9eWhzLVNGMDEmdHlwZT1SVk1DXzgwODAxMjQwJm9idDlicGR5ZWQ9MCZwPWdlaWNvK2FkJnBhcmFtMT1tVF9GUVVGTGFBTm1FOFhfTV9VaGhLVElUV1Q1enRfWFJVZXBWMmlRWERzYmsyZ2lhQ3pBWVQ0S1cyUGo3UEl4angyeHpoLXIxN0RLT1NPUUwtVURURWhYeVZvemY4LUQ3UXJJd1BlZDRpZTlUVDFaNkFFeGxIMVNMT1VSYV9CNzJoZ2hRRU94Y2xhZ09rcjFQbkRhN3kxaVl4TzNqSW0zaDdMazhJT0VCMWVNVFBzaXFDYXFrLUtnb0gwUjFHMW9KSWg1SkpnZ2hScmZsUEZvNDlyWFF3SzRac2xBdXRxZzJaZmxCdnJHWjBkRXN5a0p4VVgwTjlNenFxem1MQSUyYyUyYw&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAMZsZJ6VMs5IBclipCcoCUtPjdDbbuslriFKZip563L4LwOWusc26Rlz6bwGL4g-_uSeIsMaE9rNz8pohuuBOP9W3BHj9NC478SvCPvxXE_e52pnWsuQzgEOa5TTdkPAOo3PkgJKcur9oOVujrw_qjumkdqJ-ePWv6eTNmxCGTuD&_guc_consent_skip=1584546046

When I was in high school (yes, a long time ago) I did Create An Ad and found it extremely boring until I decided I was going to find a way to incorporate super heroes into it.  Suddenly I was excited about it because I incorporated things that I enjoyed into the ad.  Do the same thing!  If you get a bank, don't feel trapped into drawing a Bank OR money IN your imaGe.  If you like drawing dinosaurs come up with a funny headline or pun to make sense of the ad featuring them.  Most people find puppies, kittens or babies cute, if that is what you're going for then feature them in your art.

Some of these businesses will not be open with the current state of the world, but some will and others will ask you to leave a message.  Begin by calling your contact person listed below.

I recommend doing this:
Hi, my name is (insert your name), I am from Frontier Regional School and I am doing an ad for your business.  Is there anything specific you would like me to include?
They will either say, do whatever you want or they will give you specifics.  Be ready to write it down and ask questions.

You will NOT be visiting any locations but I would recommend looking at their website, social media etc...  If they do not get back to you within 48 hours we will move ahead without their feedback.
If someone is rude please let me know and I will deal with it and get back to you. (this is a very unusual case.  Most of them want you to deliver excellent work to represent them in a positive way.)

MIDDLE SCHOOL EXPLORATORY AND 3D

I hope everyone is enjoying time away from the classrooms and practicing social distancing.  Please carefully read the post below titled ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

We are going to be doing some sketching until we get back to the classroom and the expectations will be 1/2 hour of drawing per week.

You can do these drawings on plain white copy paper or whatever you have around your home.

For this week's drawing, choose any object to draw from observation in pencil only. (make sure it has no text on it)
Use the same process we always practice.

Hold on to this piece and I will give you further instructions for part 2 on Monday.

Please email or comment here if you have any questions and please check in on Monday!

DESIGN and ADVANCED ART CLASSES- please comment here after reading the link below and this entry

I hope you are all doing well with these unusual circumstances!  I am going to list everyone's business that you have been assigned for Create An Ad 2020.  The deadline will be adjusted depending on when we return to school so don't worry about that.   Please carefully read the post below titled ALL STUDENTS PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

Find your info below and email me if you have questions.  Your assignment is to deliver about 2 hours worth of ideas, sketches by Friday at 11a.m.

Sketchbooks assignments due 3/13

Expectations for all sketchbook assignments are to spend a focused, undistracted hour drawing the assignment.(an unfinished drawing is acceptable as long as the time is spent.)  Assignment is (most often) given on Monday and due by Friday.  Begin with basic shapes and "sculpt" the details to bring it to completion.
Make sure to write the date you turned it in on the back along with a word or two about what the assignment was.
If for some reason you misplace your sketchbook, do the assignment on white paper and turn it in.  We can put it in your sketchbook at a later date.

Late work is accepted but drops a letter grade every school day that it is late.  Do your best work and have fun!

Advanced Art- Draw one of the birds you are using for Alphabird from a photo reference.

MS Exloratory- Create a font for your first and last name.  Think about what you want to emphasize and communicate.  Consider using some kind of simple visual to commuicate your point.  If you use color limit yourself to two.

Foundations- Foreground Middleground Background

We will continue building our pen and ink skills by introducing brush and crow quill pens to apply ink with in this project.

Begin by finding three photo references of any three different objects you choose. ( no text on them, no paintings or drawings)
Choose a theme that interests you.
Place one object in the foreground (so close to the viewer that you can not see the entire objext because it is bleeding off the page)
Place one object in the middleground  (in the middle of the picture plane where it could be a few yards from the viewer)
Place the third object in the background (where it is extremely far from the viewer and significant distance from the middleground.)

Consider overlapping objects so that it adds to the illusion of depth.

Create at least 3 different thumbnail sketches to organize your thoughts about how you are going to arrange your three elements on the page to make an interesting composition.  Make sure each one is a unique thought, do not repeat the same thing three times.

After you get a sketch approved you can will move on to the bristol board where you will begin with basic shapes, center line, construction lines as always and create a finished pencil drawing before adding ink.  When you are drawing you objects make sure to consider a light source so that you can create values using hatching, crosshatching, and stippling.

Be certain that you have taken a careful look at M.C. Escher : His Life and Complete Graphic work book before before completing the pencil stage of your work and moving on to the inks.

Once pencil drawings are complete (or close to complete) there will be demonstrations of both brushes and crow quill pens as well as stippling techniques.

Composition- The arrangement of elements on the page

Thumbnail sketch- A miniature version of what your finished work will look like that allows you to figure out how you will arrange your elements on the page.

Stippling- Using small marks to create values

Design-Tattoo Design

Please read the following along with the links and assignment at the bottom of page.

Early Jesuit settlers document widespread tattooing among the Native American Indian. Among many of the tribes unique tattoo designs were used to mark outstanding warriors and a sign of arrival to manhood.

The Ontario Iroquoians used elaborate designs to identify those very high in social status and in many North-West American Tribes the women were tattooed on their chins as a sign of marriage or commitment.

The first permanent tattoo shop was established in New York City in 1846 by Martin Hildebrandt who began his craft by traveling to both side of the civil war tattooing the names of soldiers and sailors sweethearts as it was seen as a sign of good luck. Hildebrandt spent the next 20 years training artist in his craft. The 2nd shop opened in the United States also provided probably the most significant invention on the tattoo industry.

Samuel O'Reilly was the founder of this shop and in 1891 invented the first electric tattooing machine. Prior to his invention the needles were dipped in ink and the artist would manually puncture the skin only two or three times a second. The electric machine allowed an artist to draw directly on the customer skin.

The 1900's were an emerging time for tattoos in the United States. Prior to this period it was mostly an unknown art and moved into an age where advertising became more prominent.

Today the Tattoo art form continues stronger than ever gaining more social acceptance on a broader scale. Once looked at as something reserved for criminals, low life's and biker gangs. Tattoos can been found in every economic and social scale in the United States. Prominent celebrities proudly display their artwork on network television broadcasts. Musicians from every genre can be seen boasting tattoo designs from a single small tattoo to more elaborate and extensive full body art.

Comment by finding and including examples of tattoos/black and white illustrations and identifying:
BROKEN LINE
CONTINUOUS LINE
HATCHING/CROSSHATCHING
STIPPLING
SPATTERING

Your assignment will be to create a tattoo design that incorporates the five different elements above as well as a variety of line weights.  You must have a minumum of three distinctive and deliberate line weights that serve the intention of the work.  Think about the illusion you are trying to create and consider light source, texture and depth.
We will begin with a pencil drawing on bristol board and use brush, crow quill and any other instruments to create your image.  Minimum size is 6 inches by 6 inches.
Color is optional.
