Foundations Final

Write a 2 page double spaced paper on an artist of your choice.  Please include a works cited page as well.  Your artist  must be approved by Mr. P   before you begin.  You can choose any artist living or dead as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (Please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
Provide biographical information as well as their training, most significant accomplishments and what they are best known for.  Discuss the artist's significance in the art world and the process of how they developed their work.  This is not an opinion piece so please focus on facts first.

Part two of this project is to create a full color  9 x 12 painting that best represents the artist's style and using one of the subjects they were best known for.  You can choose either watercolor or acrylic, maybe even a combination.
You will need to know ALL elements and principles of art and be able to identify the use of them in your work.  Be prepared for questions which will be a part of your grade.

Presentations during the exam block will be brief but should present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artists.  You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. (start with being certain how to pronounce your artist’s name)   This project counts for 20% of your grade!
Have fun with this piece and do your best work!  I strongly encourage you to choose an artist who you feel some personal connection to, not Van Gogh or Picasso because you know them already or have written a paper on them already.  You are not limited to "fine artists" who show in galleries, visual artists who work in video games, design, graphic novels, film etc... are all equally valid.

Please be sure not to plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero!!  Please be careful not to cut and paste or re-word from any web site or book.
Be at your table prepared for your presentation before the bell rings. (if you are printing your paper in the LMC before the bell and you arrive after the bell, you lose your slot to present so get all work done and printed ahead of time.)   Late work or emailed papers will not be accepted.

Drawing and Painting Final

Write a 2 page double spaced paper on an artist of your choice.  Please include a works cited page as well.  Your artist  must be approved by Mr. P   before you begin.  The artist must be one who has created/creates  self portraits and can be from any era, working with any painting medium (pastels, oils, acrylics…) as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (Please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
Provide biographical information as well as their training and most significant accomplishments and what they are best known for.  There are many qualities you could choose to focus on such as how subject matter is presented, scale, medium, color choices/use of color, time eras, stylistic choices, meaning/intent…  Analyze what the artist is trying to accomplish and how they do so.  (for instance, why did Monet use the colors he did?)  There are very specific reasons for this which would require research and understanding of the artists’ work.  This is not an opinion piece so please focus on facts first.

Part two of this project is to create a full color  9 x 12 self portrait that is both a likeness of yourself in some way and  that represents the artist’s stylistic approach.  Do not replicate a piece, but create your own based on the artist’s body of work. The medium is up to you but needs to be some form of painting.
You will need to know ALL elements and principles of art and be able to identify the use of them in your work.  Be prepared for questions which will be a part of your grade.

Pop Art Final

Choose an artist from the Pop Art movement (aside from Andy Warhol) and have it approved before beginning.  We will create narratives using sequential art as a vehicle.  The black and white comic book page ( 10 x 15 image on an 11 x 17 piece of board or paper) will use the artist as the narrator and will consist of at least five panels.  Use what you have learned from your reading in Will Eisner’s Comics and Sequential Art to present your information as effectively as possible.
Once your artist has been approved, begin your research on your artist to communicate the following:
Where and when were they born
What kind of training they had, any significant mentors
Noteworthy moment(s) in their career as an artist
What is the Pop Art movement and when did it happen?
An example of their artwork that best represents what they are known for
What media or mediums they use in their work
A likeness of the artist (consider using this to establish that the narrator’s voice belongs to the artist)
What were they trying to communicate in their work?  Why are they seen as a significant part of the Pop Art movement or the art world?

Demonstrate an understanding of the following elements of sequential art:
An establishing shot
A variety of “camera angles”
Utilizing the panels to assist in the storytelling process
An impact panel that showcases the most important part of the narrative.

Late projects will not be accepted.  Please have your project completed and be at your table ready to present when the bell rings.
50% of your grade will be based on the visual narrative
40% will be based on the accuracy and richness of your written content
10% will be based on your presentation and knowledge of the material

Have fun and take chances with making your page as interesting as possible
Plagiarism of any kind will result in a zero
