Contrast- Referring to the placement of opposites near one another.  This creates visual interest, drama and/or excitement

Unity- sense of wholeness in a work of art achieved through effective use of elements and principles of art.  Unity utilizes proximity, repetition and simplicity

Advanced Art Final

What is art? An often difficult question to answer, especially in contemporary work. Look at the following three artists and choose two pieces of each of their work. Louise Nevelson, Bridget Riley and a third contemporary artist of your choice who must be approved by Mr. Purcell before you begin.  (you do not need to print an image if you choose not to, but have two images for Riley and Nevelson available in full color print or on your chromebook that we can look at during the presentations)  The third artist that you choose could work in any medium and must be a contemporary artist who is currently working.  Ideally you could even attempt to reach out to them on social media and ask direct questions.

Choose the element and principle that you feel is best represented by each artist in their work and describe how they have utilized them in their work. (no repeats, assign two to each artist) Do you see meaning or value in these artists' work? What is it? What do you respond to and why? Base your opinions on facts, not subjective likes and dislikes.
For example, if I chose Andy Park as my third artist I could choose texture as the element since his digital renderings use such a wide variety of them and I would explain how and why.  For the principle I could choose contrast and discuss how and why that is used effectively in his work.

The visual component of the final is to create a 9 x 12 full color portrait of your artist that you chose and draw/paint it to show as many qualities of their work as possible.  So since Andy Park is a digital artist for Marvel films I could find photo references of him and sketch ideas of how I could paint a portrait of him that reflects the qualities of his work.  Maybe he could be in some kind of super hero uniform in a heroic pose, using a color pallete that is seen in his work.

Your paper will be two full  pages minimum, double spaced, 12 point font with no extra visuals and an additional works cited page.  Be prepared to define the elements and principles you used in your own words.

Final project counts as 20% of students' final grade
Written portion will count for 40% of final project grade, artwork 50% and presentation 10%.

No late or emailed papers will be accepted.  Have your work printed ahead of time and be prepared to present when the bell rings.

Ceramics Final Project/Presentation

Write a 2 full page (minimum) double spaced 12 point type paper about an artist of your choice who works in ANY 3D medium. ( Do not serach 3D artists and choose an artist who does 2D art that looks 3D)  Artist must be approved by Mr. P before beginning. Paper is double spaced, 12 point font, no additional images, listing all sources in an additional works cited page.  (Be certain that you can find at least 3 different independent sources of information to gather information from.  Wikipedia and the artist's personal site do not count.) Research the artist’s background and their body of work. What are they known for, their training, what medium do they work in, how do they create their work, what are their influences…? Please bring in at least one full color image of their work to show the class so everyone leaves learning something about each student’s subject. No plagiarism of any kind as it will result in a ZERO.  We will discuss plagiarism briefly so if you have questions it will up to you to ask.

Please be seated and ready to present before the bell rings.  No emailed or late papers will be accepted.  Please get your work done ahead of time to avoid printers running out of ink, not working, dogs alleviating their hunger etc...
Final project counts as 20% of your final grade so please make sure you know your material (including knowing how to correctly prounce your artist's name) as you will be asked questions.  Your presentation of the content counts for 10% of your grade, so have your full color image printed or book in hand and give a synopsis of your paper or read the paper from your seat, whichever you feel will be most effective.

Foundations Final Project

Write (and type) a 2 page (or more) 12 point font, double spaced paper on an artist of your choice. The artist must be approved by mr. P before you begin. (do not chose artists like Van Gogh and Picasso that you already know.  Think about the kind of work you like and choose someone you connect with.  For example, if you like video games, find an artist who works in that industry.  We can use artists who are alive and social media can be a great tool to reach out an ask the artist him/herself questions)  If you can not find three different and substantial resources about your artist please find a different one. The artist can be from any era and work with any medium as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
Your paper should explain the art movement(s)/period the artist was involved in, their background/history and training, and what makes their work significant in the art world. Discuss why you chose this artist and find out about their creative process; what size was their work, how did they go about creating their work, what kind of subjects did he or she work with? Additional to the two pages, please include a works cited page.

Part two of this project is to create  a 9 x 12 or bigger painting  ( watercolor or acrylic) of your artist which accomplishes two objectives:
1)  an accurate likeness of your artist and 2) a strong demonstration of what their work looks like which should include as many elements of what exemplifies their work.  You may choose to focus on brushstrokes, color pallete, composition etc...

Presentations will be brief but please present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artist. You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. (it will be helpful to write an outline) You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. (including knowing how to pronounce your artist's name.)

I am available to read first drafts anytime so you can email those to me as you are developing your paper.

Do not plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero.
Be accountable and be on time, (meaning before the bell rings, not two seconds, minutes or hours after)  Papers need to be ready to hand in at the time of presentation.  Late papers (or emailed papers) will not be accepted.

This project counts for 20% of your grade!

FOUNDATIONS- foreground middleground background acrylic painting

The objective of this project is to create a painting utilizing three different photo references from three different sources and create three distinct planes of depth. (foreground, middleground, background) in a dynamic composition.
Begin by finding a photo reference (not a drawing or painting) for a subject that will be so close to the viewer that you will only be able to see a portion of them. Think about it like this element is only a foot or two away.  Choose images/subjects that interest you and that you feel a connection to.
Middleground subject will be a few yeards from the viewer and the background will be in the distance.
Once you have your references, begin thumbnail sketches on copy paper.  Create at least 4 DIFFERENT approaches to how you want to compose your piece.  Your composition should attempt to activate all of the space in your piece and help guide the viewer's eye to look where you want them to.

https://willkempartschool.com/the-secret-of-good-composition/

Always have the three primary colors and black and white on your pallette.

Remember to conisder using both transparent and opaque treatment of the paint.  Acrylic is forgiving so if you do something that you are not happy with you can simply paint over it when it dries.  If you want to keep the paint mixable/blendable keep the surface wet.  Have fun!

MS EXPLORATORY- WATERCOLOR PAINTING

After completing our color mixing exercise we will begin a 9 x 12 painting.  Begin by choosing two photo references, one for a subject and another for a background.  The goal is to take references from two different sources to create your own piece of work.  The photo references do not have to be duplicated, the are to be available at all times on your chrome book to refer to.
Next, create at least 4 DIFFERENT thumbnail sketches on a single sheet of copy paper.  The goal of a thumbnail sketch is to organize your work and figure out an interesting composition that considers and activates all the space in your image.  These should not be detailed drawings but accurate basic shape representations of what your finished work will look like.
Begin your finish once Mr. Purcell approves a sketch with you by starting with basic shapes drawn lightly and then develop the drawing until it is finished.  Once that happens and you get a thumbs up from Mr. P you can move on to the final stage which is painting.
When you are painting, mix all colors on your plaette, do NOT just use colors that are already pre-mixed.  Have fun with your piece and go PLEASE go
back and re-read directions if you need a reminder.

Foundations- Acrylic paint

The following videos introduce you to some of the basic applications of acrylics, showing you the difference between tranparency and opacity.  After watching the following video clips please set up a one inch grid on a
9 x 12 canvas board which we will be using for exercises.  Please measure on both sides of the board when making your lines so you are esentially connecting the dots to make parallel lines.

Advanced Art- Tessellations and Vocabulary

Students will be introduced to the work of M.C. Escher and will create their tessellation shape following handout instructions using bristol for the shape template and trace 2 inter-connecting rows of three across the yellow paper for their finish.  Colored pencils will be used as the medium.  Students will create a transition/gradation of color for each row..  An example would be that the first shape in row one one could be made up of blues, while the second one consist of greens and the third be yellows.

Tessellation- A drawing in the form of a mosaic pattern.  M. C. Escher discovered the tessellation

Chromatic, chroma- Possessing the quality of color, neutrals mixed from complimentary colors as well as  lightened and darkened with black and white

Pattern- predictable and consistent design

Shape- two dimensional contour that characterizes an object or area.

Ceramics- untraditional tiles

This project will involve creating a single set of four tiles that work both individually and as a set.  The four pieces will fit together in some way but will not be the traditional flat square or rectangular shape.  (see examples in the classroom)

Begin by choosing a theme and finding a minimum of one photo reference for each piece. ( as with past projects, photo references need to be available on your chrome book at all times, every class)  Use photos of objects that you are including in your work, not drawings, paintings or other people's work.  Try to be as unique as possible!   As an example, your theme could be fast food and each tile could represent a different brand perhaps each tile being in the shape of the company logo and featuring items that they serve.

Once you have chosen a theme and have your photo references, develop sketches of your ideas and when they are complete, begin building.  Each tile needs to be a minimum of 6 x 6 inches but can be any shape and dimension as long as it exceeds this measurement.

Consider using the three main buildings techniques you have used and experiment to be as creative with how your tiles connect as possible.  Each tile must be a relief, meaning it will have several layers that create depth in the piece so it is not one flat surface.  See this link for a thorough definition and some examples:
https://www.britannica.com/art/relief-sculpture

Make sure you follow the same documentation process as always which is written on the white board and remind yourself of the objectives outlined above.

MS3D- 3D artist portrait

Our next project will involve several steps and will begin with choosing a subject for your piece.  The goal is to find an artist who interests you.  This artist could be dead or alive and could be a "fine artist" or an illustrator who works in fields of video games, graphic novels, or any other tattoos as long as you follow this criteria:
The artist has to have made a significant impact on the art world in some way.
You must find three different and reliable sources of information about their work, career and history.  (You will need biographical information)  Make sure the sources did not copy/paste the same information.  Wikipedia is NOT a reliable site.

We will be using a shoebox to create this piece and beginning with a drawing, we will be painting with acrylics.  Every student will be focusing on a different artist.

Once you have found these sources here are the objectives for this project:
Find four different interesting pieces of information about your artist as a person.  This could include where they were born, went to school, significant moments in their lives, intersting qualities or interests they may have etc...
Find strong photo referenceS of what your artist looks like so you can create an accurate likeness of them.
Learn about their work. What media do they use?  What are they best known for?  What qualities make their work stand out and appear unique?  Is there a general mood about their work?  Is there a specific color pallete they use?  Specific subject matter?

Once you have gathered this information and had it approved by Mr. Purcell you can begin by applying gesso to your shoebox so that you have a white ground to draw on.

On each of the four sides of the outer box you will choose a different significant aspect of the artist's life as discussed above.  The top of the shoebox will be a portrait of the artist with a background, and the artist him/herself will be cut out only attaching at the base so that it can stand up.
The inside of the box should give the viewer an idea of what the artist's work looks like.  You could replicate a piece they are best known for or maybe try to represent what ideas may be in their head when they are creating their work.

It will be crucial to your success that you are following directions and are prepared to work and use materials responsibly.  Anyone who is not meeting these expectations will be given an alternate project.  The alternate project is a 5 page paper to be written on your chrome book on the artist you chose.  Specific criteria will be given if this is necessary for any students.

Drawing and Painting- self portrait

option 1
Creative self portrait.  Create an image using at least one photo reference of yourself and background elements.  The goal is to tell the viewer something about yourself other than what you look like.  Think about your composition, color choices and the message.  Consider making a list of things about yourself to help in choosing your focus.  Perhaps things that you value or are passionate about, people, furure goals.

option 2
Using the grid technique to create a self portrait.  You will need to print a sharp full color image of your face that takes up approximately 90% of the image.  Create a grid of one inch squares on the image and a corropsponding grid on an image of your finished paper.  Draw one square at a time and do it while holding your image upside down to abstract the image and focus simply on what you see one square at a time.  After the drawing is complete we will paint it with acrylics.  Remember to use LIGHT pencil lines when constructing the grid and the image so that they will not be a predominant part of the finished painted image.

Foundations- Architecture watercolor

This project builds on the perpective work from our last project and will incorporate the four watercolor techniques we practiced.
Begin by choosing an architectural structure of your choice and finding a sharp full color photo reference that shows the entire structure.  Place this building in an environment of your choice which you will also need a sharp full color photo reference for.  It could be unusual or realistic but the image must have a single light source so that it looks as if it sits believably in the environment.

As always, the expectation is that you have your charged chrome book every day and have your images saved to your google docs.

You will be drawing your image on 9 x 12 paper and when you create your horizon line you will tape copy paper to each side of your project to extend the horizon line so that the vanishing points are off the finished work.
When your pencil drawing is complete begin painting and demonstrate all four of the techniques we learned; wet on dry, wet on wet, dry on wet and dry on dry.

Drawing and Painting- 8 Techniques

Spattering- Using a tool like a toothbrush to flick paint in a controlled manner at the image surface.

Impasto- Building up the surface of the paint so it becomes 3-D

Drybrushing- Removing excess paint from the brush and scrubbing it against the surface to create a scumbling effect.

Knife painting- Using a pallette knife to apply paint to the surface

Rubbing/imprint- Using a three dimensional item of surface to create a texture

Mix with another element- add items like sand or sawdust to the paint which creates a textured surface.

Stencil/masking- Covering an area to keep it from being effected by a treatment on other portions of a painting.

Sgraffito- (pronounced zgra-FI-tow)  Scratching into an existing wet layer of paint with a palette knife, revealing the layer below.

Advanced Art- Alphabird

After reading the last post on typefaces you will be ready to move on to the assignment.  Choose 3 different letterforms from three different fonts.  No L's, I's or O's.  Then choose 3 different birds and get photo references of each.  Begin thumbnail sketches on ways to create the letterforms you chose using the three birds.  Each of the birds should be approximately 10 inches tall and you may use any mixed media you choose.  You will need at least two so colored pencil and watercolor would be an example.
Focus on these objectives:
Beginning your drawing with basic shapes using the letterforms as a "skeleton"
Focus on texture and create at least 3 different distict textures with each of the birds.
Make sure that the letterforms are readable in the amalgam form that you create.

Unity- sense of wholeness in a work of art achieved through effective use of elements and principles of art.  Unity utilizes proximity, repetition and simplicity

Drawing and Painting- Watercolor

We will be continuing our exploration of the basic shape/sculpting drawing technique with another observation exercise.  The key to drawing from observation is to draw the objects that you see, not preconceived notions of what they look like.
Begin by look at the link below to see examples of Janet Fish's work:
https://www.google.com/search?q=janet+fish+distortion&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjyou_48sPZAhUmwVkKHZujBSwQ_AUICigB&biw=1366&bih=637&safe=active&ssui=on

Choose a glass object and fill it half way with water, then place an object in that is partially submerged.  The goal for this project is to fit the entire subject on the page and draw it as accurately as you can.  I will provide a demo on the four basic watercolor techniques next week and we will employ those techniques to complete the piece.
Remeber to take one step at a time and always be looking back and forth between your subject and your paper.  Have fun!

Ceramics 2

The era of 35,000- 7,000 BC was known for it’s variety of man’s attempts to embody abstract and intangible concepts. The first project will focus students of the concept of Goddess. These are commonly referred to as Venus and often are constructed with exaggerated shapes. Students will follow the Frontier Visual Art Blog and follow the links to begin researching this era and the various incarnations that exist. Once students answer questions on the blog they will move on to begin sketching concepts which they will ultimately build and glaze. This first project reiterates basic drawing techniques which will be used in every project throughout this class. Students will be asked to follow the same process of documentation for each project as they did in Ceramics I. Students will create three different Goddesses and begin each piece by creating a sketch of their initial concept beginning with basic shapes and “sculpting” the details from that foundation. When this drawing is complete, they begin the construction of their work with white clay.

Welcome to my Art Blog Bienvenidos a mi blog de arte

You and I Are the Same

You and I are the same
but we don't let our hearts see.
Black, White and Asian
Africa, China, United States and all other
countries around the world
Peel off their skin
Like you peel an orange
See their flesh
like you see in my heart
Peel off their meat
And peel my wickedness with it too
Until there's nothing left
but bones.
Then you will see that you and I
are the same.

sino huesos.
Entonces verás que tú y yo
somos iguales.
