Extra Credit Sketchbooks- Middle School and High School

An extra credit sketchbook will be accepted until Wednesday June 12th.  Any one hour (one full hour using the techniques we have been doing since our first day)  observation drawing with the date and extra credit written on the back should be handed directly to Mr Purcell and that grade will replace one that is below an A.  This is optional but strongly recommended if you failed to hand in an assignment from quarter four.

Middle School Exploratory- Acrylics Self Portrait

Create an image that describes who you are.  What are your interests, ambitions etc...  Your image should be more than what you look like and does not necessarily have to even show your face.  Be creative and try different ideas.  Find photo references for the elements you are going to draw and paint before starting the 9 x 12 finished canvas board.

Demonstrate all 7 elements of art in your work.  For color, demonstarte at least 3 different examples of all three properties and for texture demonstrate at least 3 different textures.  You will be asked to identify them all on the last day of class before taking them home.  We may not finish the paintings so just do your best and make sure you accomplish the objectives to the very best of your ability.

Elements Of Art

Value- the degree of lightness or darkness of an object

Line- the path of a moving point through space

Shape- 2d area that is either organic or geometric.  Has height and width but no depth

Form- objects that have three dimensions

Color- derived from reflected light.  Has three properties:  Hue- names of the colors, Value- lightness or darkness  Intensity- purity of the hue or chrome

Texture- degree of roughness or smoothness of an object, can be tactile or visual

Space- referring to the emptiness or area between, around or within objects

Design Final Presentations- Thursday June 13

Students will be exploring architectural design through the aesthetics of Frank Lloyd Wright's work.  Review the book, Frank Lloyd Wright A Gatefold Portfolio and focus on the homes he built.

You are being given an unlimited budget to create a home in South Deerfield utilizing the qualities of FLW's work.  Create a general floorplan on 9 x 12 white paper using a ruler and any other technical tools necessary to create a clean general idea of the interior space. (examples below)

Using two point perspective, create a full color rendering of the outside.  The finished product can be colored with either copics, watercolor or mixed media.

Part 2: Write a 2 page double spaced, 12 point font paper with an additional works cited page describing to your client 12 different ways that you have incorporated elements of FLW's work into their home.  Choose specifics, not opinions, but factual elements and the way they are utilized in his spaces.  An example would be the placement of a fireplace which could be in the center of the house, symbolizing warmth and the heart of the space.
Please be on time (not two seconds after the bell, two minutes, two hours...) and ready to present when the bell rings.  Have papers printed ahead of time, not last minute in the LMC.  No late work or emailed papers will be accepted.  Know your subject as you will be asked questions regarding your justification for your design choices which will impact your grade.

Ceramics 2 Final Project A block- Wed 6/12, B block- Thurs 6/13

Students will be asked to research and choose a female artist who creates 3D art. Each student will choose a different artist that needs to be approved by Mr. Purcell and write a 2 full page (minimum) 12 point font paper with no added images plus an additional works cited page.
Be certain that you can find at least 3 different independent sources of information to gather information from.  Wikipedia and the artist's personal site do not count.

Create a representation of this artist’s aesthetic identity and facts about their life, training, creative process and notable aspects of their career in the arts. The artist's work has to be three dimensional but the media utilized is unlimited. Students will represent that work with a clay structure of their choice with the option to include other materials. Presentations will count for 20% of final grade.

Be in class before the bell with all materials ready to present.  No late or emailed papers will be accepted.  Please do not plagiarize in any way and begin by learning the correct pronunciation of your artist's name.

Presentations can be a well thought through synopsis with note cards or the paper can be read to the class.  Please be prepared to know your subject matter and answer questions.

Ceramics Final Project/Presentation- Wed 6/12, B block- Thurs 6/13

Write a 2 full page (minimum) double spaced 12 point type paper about an artist of your choice who works in ANY 3D medium. ( Do not serach 3D artists and choose an artist who does 2D art that looks 3D)  Artist must be approved by Mr. P before beginning. Paper is double spaced, 12 point font, no additional images, listing all sources in an additional works cited page.  (Be certain that you can find at least 3 different independent sources of information to gather information from.  Wikipedia and the artist's personal site do not count.) Research the artist’s background and their body of work. What are they known for, their training, what medium do they work in, how do they create their work, what are their influences…? Please bring in at least one full color image of their work to show the class so everyone leaves learning something about each student’s subject. No plagiarism of any kind as it will result in a ZERO.  We will discuss plagiarism briefly so if you have questions it will up to you to ask.

Please be seated and ready to present before the bell rings.  No emailed or late papers will be accepted.  Please get your work done ahead of time to avoid printers running out of ink, not working, dogs alleviating their hunger etc...

I am available to read drafts before you hand in the final.

Final project counts as 20% of your final grade so please make sure you know your material (including knowing how to correctly prounce your artist's name) as you will be asked questions.  Your presentation of the content counts for 10% of your grade, so have your full color image printed or book in hand and give a synopsis of your paper or read the paper from your seat, whichever you feel will be most effective.

Ceramics- Wheel Throwing

After viewing demos and reading handouts students will demonstrate the process by generating at least three pieces.  All three pieces must follow the steps in the sequence they are taught and have the handout available throughout the entire process.  After three pieces are created students can begin to explore any variations in the process that they choose.  Students will turn in the best piece for a grade.  Schedule is posted on the board and students need to be prepared to work when they are scheduled and to consider having a change of clothes and wear a smock.

Foundations Final Presentation- Thursday 6/13

Foundations Final Project

Write (and type) a 2 full page (minuimum) 12 point font, double spaced paper on an artist of your choice. The artist must be approved by mr. P before you begin. (do not chose artists like Van Gogh and Picasso that you already know.  Think about the kind of work you like and choose someone you connect with.  For example, if you like video games, find an artist who works in that industry.  We can use artists who are alive and social media can be a great tool to reach out an ask the artist him/herself questions)  If you can not find three different and substantial resources about your artist please find a different one. The artist can be from any era and work with any medium as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
Your paper should explain the art movement(s)/period the artist was involved in, their background/history and training, and what makes their work significant in the art world. Discuss why you chose this artist and find out about their creative process; what size was their work, how did they go about creating their work, what kind of subjects did he or she work with? Additional to the two pages, please include a works cited page.

Part two of this project is to create  a 9 x 12 or bigger painting  ( watercolor or acrylic) of your artist which accomplishes two objectives:
1)  an accurate likeness of your artist and 2) a strong demonstration of what their work looks like which should include as many elements of what exemplifies their work.  You may choose to focus on brushstrokes, color pallete, composition etc...

Presentations will be brief but please present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artist. You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. (it will be helpful to write an outline) You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. (including knowing how to pronounce your artist's name.)

I am available to read first drafts anytime so you can email those to me as you are developing your paper.

Do not plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero.
Be accountable and be on time, (meaning before the bell rings, not two seconds, minutes or hours after)  Papers need to be ready to hand in at the time of presentation.  Late papers (or emailed papers) will not be accepted.

This project counts for 20% of your grade!
