Ceramics 2-Contemporary 3D art

Students will continue to investigate untraditional approaches to building with clay and have the option of bringing in different media to combine with clay including wire and wood. Exploration of artists who are currently working in the field will be the focus for this project. Students will be able to choose red or white clay or perhaps a combination. There will be less boundaries with this assignment than any previous. Students will present ideas/concepts that demonstrate the principles of art and get them approved, working solo or with a partner or even a small group.

Drawing and Painting Final

Write a 2 page (or more) double spaced paper, 12 point type, on an artist of your choice.  Please include a works cited page as well.  Your artist  must be approved by Mr. P   before you begin.  You can choose any artist living or dead as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (Please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)
Provide biographical information as well as their training, most significant accomplishments and what they are best known for.  Discuss the artist's significance in the art world and the process of how they developed their work.  This is not an opinion piece so please focus on facts first.

Create a 9 x 12 or larger full color image with acrylics that best represents your artist's work.

Presentations during the exam block will be brief but should present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artists.  You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. (start with being certain how to pronounce your artist’s name)   This project counts for 20% of your grade!
Have fun with this piece and do your best work!  I strongly encourage you to choose an artist who you feel some personal connection to, not Van Gogh or Picasso because you know them already or have previously written a paper on them.  You are not limited to "fine artists" who show in galleries, visual artists who work in video games, design, graphic novels, film etc... are all equally valid.

Please be sure not to plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero!!  Please be careful not to cut and paste or re-word from any web site or book.
Be at your table prepared for your presentation before the bell rings. (if you are printing your paper in the LMC before the bell and you arrive after the bell, you lose your slot to present so get all work done and printed ahead of time.)   Late work or emailed papers will not be accepted.

Foundations Final Project

Foundations final

final projects will be presented during the exam block.

Write (and type) a 2 page (or more) 12 point font, double spaced paper on an artist of your choice. The artist must be approved by mr. P before you begin. (do not chose artists like Van Gogh and Picasso that you already know.  Think about the kind of work you like and choose someone you connect with.  For example, if you like video games, find an artist who works in that industry.  We can use artists who are alive and social media can be a great tool to reach out an ask the artist him/herself questions)  If you can not find three different and substantial resources about your artist please find a different one. The artist can be from any era and work with any medium as long as they have contributed to the art world in a significant way. (please avoid writing a paper about an uncle who likes to paint etc…)

Your paper should explain the art movement(s)/period the artist was involved in, their background/history and training, and what makes their work significant in the art world. Discuss why you chose this artist and find out about their creative process; what size was their work, how did they go about creating their work, what kind of subjects did he or she work with? Please include a works cited page.

Part two of this project is to create  a 9 x 12 or bigger painting (watercolor or acrylic) of your artist which accomplishes two objectives:
1)  an accurate likeness of your artist and 2) a strong demonstration of what their work looks like which should include as many elements of what exemplifies their work.  You may choose to focus on brushstrokes, color pallet, composition etc...
(Foundations 2 students will additionally write a page discussing how you demonstrated use of the principles of art: balance, rhthym, pattern, emphasis, movement, contrast and unity in your painting)

Presentations will be brief but please present to the class as though no one has any prior knowledge of the artist. You do not have to read the paper but give a well thought through synopsis along with the image. (it will be helpful to write an outline) You will likely be asked some basic questions as well so make sure you know your topic. (including knowing how to pronounce your artist's name.)

Do not plagiarize in any way as it will result in a zero.
Be accountable and be on time, (meaning before the bell rings, not two seconds, minutes or hours after)  Papers need to be ready to hand in at the time of presentation.  Late papers (or emailed papers) will not be accepted.

MS3D Frank Lloyd Wright style art rooms

Imagine you are an architect who is approached by a client, in this case Frontier Regional School, who has an unlimited budget to re-design the art space.  There are currently two rooms, one for ceramics/3D work and a second for general drawing/painting.  They are asking you to bulldoze the current space and re-create it from scratch.  It must be a safe and effective environment for students and be designed in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright.  The space should reflect FLW's ideology (look it up) in the organization and use of the elements of art.

Elements of art:
Line
Value
Shape
Form
Color
Texture
Space

Begin by using your chrome books to gather reference for ideas and examples of how FLW organized his structures.  Create sketches of what your art space will look like.  Consider the things that you like and you think work about the current rooms as well as things you would like to change.  Once your developed sketches are approved by Mr. Purcell you will begin your 3D representation of your ideas.  Each student will have two 18 x 24 sheets of foam board as well as access to randoms in their designated area by the storage spaces to build a model with.  Use foam board as a base which must be a minimum of 12 x 18.  You can use acrylic paint to mix your colors specifically and apply them to all of your materials.  Have fun!

Foundations- Portrait in acrylics

After completing exercises with color mixing and painting techniques students will choose a photo reference of a person's face to work from for their portrait assignment.
The photo reference must be available at all times on each student's fully charged chrome book every day of class.

The photographic image must be:
entire head facing straight on at the viewer
sharp high resolution
well lit and evenly lit
full color
large enough so that it fills nearly, if not the entire screen

Students will work on the canvas board supplied and begin with the same technique as with every piece, a pencil drawing utilizing basic shapes and construction lines and then developed by "sculpting" the shapes.  The goal is to create as strong a likeness of the subject as possible.  Once the drawing stage has been approved by Mr. Purcell, please begin painting with an underpainting and then working dark to light as much as you can.  No pure white should be used at all until the very end.

Make sure your palette always has the three primary colors available.  Have fun!

Ceramics 2- Mochina Culture South America

Students will discover Peruvian work in the Moche culture from 100-800 AD and the organic nature of the work which were often used as musical instruments. Students will be introduced to using molds to create a variety of handles that they will attach to their work to represent trademark aesthetic choices of this culture.

Objectives:
At least one piece will use white clay and a monochromatic palette of reds.
Incorporate 2 principles of art; rhythm and pattern into each piece beginning with sketches.
Utilize the handle molds in at least one of the three pieces.

Students can choose to focus on
1) Goddesses/Gods/Shamans with coils/handles integrated into the design
2) Musical instruments integrating elements of animal anatomy and coils/handles

Please read the following and outline a plan of how you want to proceed with your three individual pieces:

Ceramics 2- Jomon

Students will draw on past experience with coils and use that construction technique as a basis for building three different Jomon (meaning cord pattern) pieces of pottery. This work primarily occurred between 10,000-1000 BC and perhaps even earlier as seen in the links.

After gathering references and sketching, students will throw three pots on the wheel with white clay and create adornments with coils to represent the stylistic trademarks from this era.

Answer the following in your comment to this entry:

What were characteristics of the Japanese culture during this period?
What were characteristics of the ceramic work during this period?

Define:

neolithic
cord-marked

Copy and paste the following link and after reading, answer the three questions above and define the two terms by commenting on this entry.  Due by Monday Oct. 23rd 8 a.m.

Drawing and Painting- Mixing color with watercolors

Yong Chen is a professional artist/teacher/professor who works mostly with watercolor.  Follow along with this video to the best of your ability.  This exercise will take about a half hour.  Feel free to pause along the way when necessary especially to keep your water clean which allows colors to remain pure.
You will be graded on following the directions and efficient use of classtime. (this does require focus to demonstrate your ability effectively)  Do your best to mix accurately but as always, process is the focus, not finished product.

I strongly recommend subscribing to this channel and watch his lessons that appeal to you.

Foundations 2- Additional video demos of 3 pt perspective

Watch both of these videos and you should be ready to begin your assignment.  Again, remember not to let yourself make this more complex than it is.  This is essentially a two point perspective which you have already learned, except the vertical lines will be replaced by angled lines originating at the third vanishing point.  You will be required to tape a second piece of paper onto your finished work for the 3rd vp and if necessary, for your first and second which will be on your horizon line as you have done in Foundations.

Foundations- Perspective

Please carefully watch these videos on one point and two point perspective.
We will be working towards creating drawings of objects both above and below the horizon line in and one and two point perspective as well as a series of evenly spaced objects receding back into space.

Foundations 2- 3 point perspective
These are two different approaches.  We will be using rulers to craft our pieces in class.  You will all need a high resolution photo reference on your chrome books featuring at least 3 skyscrapers next to each other.  Consider your perspective from either a worm's eye or bird's eye perspective.

Ceramics 2 Mesopotamia (Meza-PO-tania)

Mesopotamia, the "land between" the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which would now be in the region of Syria, is the focus for the second project. Red clay was abundant in this area and students will use red clay to create three structures. In approximately 6000 BC, pottery known as Halaf pottery was known for it’s smooth surface and often used a very limited palette of both red and black pigments. (distinctive blues were used as this period of art evolved)
Students will, again, follow links provided on the blog and research this period in time and look at the traits of this work including not only the smooth surfaces but the the use of animals as a theme for both utilitarian work as well as aesthetic creations. References of three different animals will be gathered and students will create three different pieces. The wheel will be an option for students to utilize in the creation of these pieces. Artwork may be produced in any form from sculpture to a bowl or plate.

Alternate assignment will be to investigate and create a foot tall free-standing Lamassu, which were known to be mythical guardians in animal form with human heads. Students will investigate the treasures of Ur which will provide many examples of animal subjects, color pallets and designs.

Please read assigned links above and comment with initial thoughts for how you want to proceed with this project. (comment will not automatically appear so please send only once)

Classroom expectations

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS MY FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT EXPECTATION IS THAT YOU DO YOUR PERSONAL BEST. THERE ARE NO “WON’TS” OR “CAN’TS”.

YOU WILL NEED TO GET A SKETCHBOOK THAT IS 9 X 12 OR LARGER. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE GIVEN ON MONDAYS AND DUE ON FRIDAYS. THESE COUNT FOR 20% OF YOUR GRADE.

RESPECT For class environment- Students are expected to arrive on time. Please be seated and ready for class to begin once the bell has rung. The three strike policy is in effect. At your third tardiness without a valid pass, detentions begin. Talking about class-appropriate topics at your own table is fine unless it is disrupting to you, others or Mr. P.

Music will be allowed in class when dialogues are not in progress. Feel free to bring in music that is appropriate for school. Headphones are negotiable but they are a privilege, not a right. The use of cell phones during class time is not allowed even if it your parents calling/texting. Phones should be off and out of sight during class. Texting in class will result in the following: 1st offense is a warning, 2nd offense results in your phone being taken for the class period, 3rd results in your phone being handed over to Mr. Dredge for you to pick up at the end of the day, and 4th offense will require your parents to see Mr. Dredge to get your phone back. If there are occasions that phones can be used for reference or purposes directly related to classroom activity, please ask Mr. P for permission.

For others- You are expected to extend common courtesy to others. Be helpful and pleasant. Never make fun of another student, or his/her artwork. Please make marks on your artwork only. Keep criticism constructive please. Use language responsibly please! For materials- Use materials only as directed. Do not use materials that you do not have permission from Mr. P for, some can be dangerous. Let’s not waste materials, they are expensive and often not easily replaced. For Mr. P- Please ask before removing anything from Mr. P’s desk or cabinets etc...

Please be attentive when the class is being addressed. One cannot effectively talk and listen simultaneously.

For time- Since we do not have a lot of time and setting up/cleaning up uses up that time, please use class time wisely. A large part of your grades are dependent on how you use your time. Never leave the room without letting Mr. P know your destination. Please remain seated until the bell rings, no lining up at the door.

SAFETY Do not throw anything Always act with regard for safety Be aware of evacuation procedures

CLEAN-UP If you use it, put it away properly. If you spill it, wipe it up. Clean at least one quarter of the worktable each day Do not leave a single thing on the table top (including eraser shreds, which you are expected to brush into the trash, not the floor) Put your chair up at the end of class Never leave anything in the sink

HAVE FUN The goal of all my classes is to learn new skills and grow as an individual and an artist. If the above information is adhered to, we will have fun and learn at the same time. -remember, our focus is process before product.

Ceramics 2 Paleolithic Age 25,000-7,000 BC

The era of 35,000- 7,000 BC was known for it’s variety of man’s attempts to embody abstract and intangible concepts. The first project will focus students of the concept of Goddess. These are commonly referred to as Venus and often are constructed with exaggerated shapes. Students will follow the Frontier Visual Art Blog and follow the links to begin researching this era and the various incarnations that exist. Once students answer questions on the blog they will move on to begin sketching concepts which they will ultimately build and glaze. This first project reiterates basic drawing techniques which will be used in every project throughout this class. Students will be asked to follow the same process of documentation for each project as they did in Ceramics I. Students will create three different Goddesses and begin each piece by creating a sketch of their initial concept beginning with basic shapes and “sculpting” the details from that foundation. When this drawing is complete, they begin the construction of their work with white clay.

Begin your research here:

Please follow this blog and make a comment that you read and viewed the material which verifies your being able to communicate directly.  Once you enter your comment it WILL NOT immediately appear and will do so once approved by Mr. Purcell so please send one time only.

Design final

Students will be exploring architectural design through the aesthetics of Frank Lloyd Wright's work.  Review the book, Frank Lloyd Wright A Gatefold Portfolio and focus on the homes he built.
You are being given an unlimited budget to create a home in South Deerfield utilizing the qualities of FLW's work.  Create a general floorplan on 9 x 12 white paper using a ruler and any other technical tools necessary to create a clean general idea of the interior space. (examples below)

https://www.google.com/search?q=Frank+Lloyd+Wright+floor+plan+drawings&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiq9d-Joa7UAhUENj4KHSfYCaEQ_AUICigB&biw=1279&bih=608&safe=active&ssui=on

Using two point perspective, create a full color rendering of the outside.  The finished product can be colored with either copics, watercolor or mixed media.

Part 2: Write a 2 page double spaced, 12 point font paper with an additional works cited page describing to your client 12 different ways that you have incorporated elements of FLW's work into their home.  Choose specifics, not opinions, but factual elements and the way they are utilized in his spaces.  An example would be the placement of a fireplace which could be in the center of the house, symbolizing warmth and the heart of the space.
Please be on time (not two seconds after the bell, two minutes, two hours...) and ready to present when the bell rings.  Have papers printed ahead of time, not last minute in the LMC.  No late work or emailed papers will be accepted.  Know your subject as you will be asked questions regarding your justification for your design choices which will impact your grade.

2 page paper (double spaced and 12 point type with an additional works cited page) about an artist of your choice who works in any 3D medium. ( Do not serach 3D artists and choose an artist who does 2D art that looks 3D)  Artist must be approved by Mr. P before beginning. Paper is double spaced, listing all sources. Research the artist’s background and their body of work. What are they known for and why?  Explain what kind of  training they had, what medium(s) do they work in? What are their influences and why? Please bring in at least one printed full color image of their work to show the class so everyone leaves learning something about each student’s subject. No plagiarism of any kind as it will count as a zero.
Please be ready to present when the bell rings. (not two seconds, two minutes after the bell etc...)  Please do not wait until the last minute printing work out as you will surrender your spot to present and lose 10 points off your grade that you would earn for the presentation.  No emailed or late papers will be accepted.  Please get your work done ahead of time to avoid printers running out of ink, not working, dogs alleviating their hunger etc...
Final project counts as 20% of your grade so please make sure you know your material (including knowing how to correctly prounce your artist's name) as you will be asked questions.

Ceramics 2 Final

Students will be asked to research and choose a contemporary female artist who creates 3D art. Each student will choose a different artist that needs to be approved by Mr. Purcell and write a 2 page double spaced paper, 12 point type, plus a works cited page and create a representation of this artist’s aesthetic identity and facts about their life, training, creative process and notable aspects of their career in the arts. The artist's work has to be three dimensional but the media utilized is unlimited. Students will represent that work with a full color product that best represents their artists' work. Presentations will happen during the last day of class and will count for 20% of final grade.
Be in class before the bell with all materials ready to present.  No late or emailed papers will be accepted.  Please do not plagiarize in any way and begin by learning the correct pronunciation of your artist's name.
Presentations can be a well thought through synopsis with note cards or the paper can be read to the class.  Please be prepared to know your subject matter and answer questions.
