Design- Architectural Design week of 4/27-5/1

Our next project will be architectural design.  To begin, here is a link to some amazing (and brief) video tours of various Frank Lloyd Wright buildings.  Please take the time to watch them all carefully and take notes to find at least 3 things you see that turn up in several (or all) of the videos that can define FLW's "style".

Make sure to sign in first and leave a comment below, due by Friday 5/1 that includes:

Three different qualities that define FLW's vision or style that reoccur in the videos.  Be as specific as possible.

Some reoccurring themes in Frank Lloyd Wright's work is how he makes sure that the home has a deep connection with the landscape of the area surrounding the home and the connection between his work and the vegetation. There is vegetation surrounding a lot of his homes. This is shown in the videos. The first video shows a waterfall right below the home, trees, and a river that is located next to the home he built. The second video the person talks about the vegetation that surrounds the house as well. In the third video, the home was FLW's winter home that was located in Arizona. The video talked about how he really likes to make sure that his work is deeply connected with the landscape. Another theme he uses a lot that reoccurs in his work is the color red. FLW often uses a rich mahogany color in the home. FLW also uses a red for the bricks that is made out of most of the homes. And finally, FLW likes to make sure that the fireplace is the center of attention in his work and likes to make sure that the fireplace stands out from everything else. In one of the videos, the person described that FLW thought of fireplaces as "The heart of the room". FLW always added fireplaces into his work.

While watching these videos about FLW work and his contruction of his homes and design their were many different elements that was used in his design of his homes. In one of the later clips in Arizona the narrator was describing the how each house he likes to have the fire place be the "heart of the room". Another element in his design was the consistancy of his landscape and vegitation, in most of the clips they describe how he uses alot o vegitation in his work so while you are inside the house you are connected to the beyond with many windows surrounding the house.Another example is the waterfall in the first clip. This really shows how the landsacape is just as important to the house itself. The last element that I saw that was frequent in his design was the use of raw material and his sharp geometric style flow to the house. Most of the houses we seen were sharp and had many points of the house and with bricks or huge rocks to the foundation to the homes.

FLW incorperates already existing a nature and natural shape of the land to build his structure to accomadate the landscape. His design is articulate when he chooses where then structure should stand and how the appearance is to to other people looking. the structure is extremely visually pleasing and he achieves this with his style of architecture nothing looks out of place or too big that it covers other things that structure stands out because of the way it accomadates the land but also pronounces it. Kinda like his idea of the fireplace in his other home being the center of attention,
