What are two devices used to show movement/speed in the page layout examples from pages 18-24

Can a sequential art page communicate time?  How?  Cite two examples of how a page with four or more panels could accomplish this.

Cite two examples of how the shape of a panel can be used to enhance storytelling.

This will count as a sketchbook assignment grade

  1. Two devices that can be used to show movement/speed, could be the use of speed lines which indicate motion, and the way certain objects are set up in a panel can indicate a speed stream, such as a door label and position of a hat.

Yes a sequential art page can communicate time, because the measurement of time has a psychological impact on us readers. Time is very useful in comics, because it is used as an essential structural element. They do this by having a three panel comic which indicates immediate action such as seconds. While a more than three panel comic indicates a more extended emotion. On page 31 the "foul play," example shows two panels prior to the dropping body, the element of shock, surprise and a bit of humor is introduced. In example on page 32, here the length of time it takes for a droplet to fall acts as a "clock," taking about 3 panels prior to the man walking in.

One example on page 35, shows what it looks like when the pace of the comic quickens. In other words the panels tend to be more crowded together and very small. Compared to the example on page 34, which shows what a long stretched out panel looks like, which conveys a long period of time. Compared to the example on page 33 where there more longer narrower panels that create a crowded feeling enhancing the rising tempo of panic in the comic. So the shape of the panel itself helps to enhance the storytelling.

  4. Two devices to use movement and speed are speed lines and the clock on the wall, also foot prints and the moon convey action. Yes a sequential art page can communicate time, because of the measurement in time have a physiological impact on us. On page 30 it shows the time in four panels on the liquid dripping down with the burning fuse. On page 31 “ foul play” shows the first two panels before the body falls then the other after the body has fallen breaking threw the top of the shop place. The shape of the panel can enhance the story telling, on page 35 the top panels are more crowded together to show the quickened pace. On page 36 one of the panels are wider to show the ‘beat’ to pause a bit.

  5. Two devices used to show movement and speed are "motion/speed lines" and action bubbles (ex: bang!).

Sequential art can communicate time in two ways. The reader's orientation helps to measure the time elapsed (p. 27). And the panel/box framing can depict time. (P. 28)

Two examples of how the shape of a panel is used to enhance storytelling:
    1. When there is a need to compress time, a greater number of panels are used.
    2. The shape of the panel helps to establish a feeling and a sense of mood.

  7. What are two devices used to show movement/speed in the page layout examples from pages 18-24?
Two devices to show movement/speed in the page layout examples from pages 18-24 are words that are used to add sounds for example to word bang. Also the use of symbols instead of the alphabet can show movement/speed.

Can a sequential art page communicate time? How? Cite two examples of how a page with four or more panels could accomplish this. Yes, a sequential art page could communicate time because the human mind can presieve time even when reflected in art. "A measure of time" on page 28 and the panel on page 29.

Cite two examples of how the shape of a panel can be used to enhance storytelling.
Two examples of how the shape of a panel can be used to enhance storytelling are the figures on page 42. The different figures except your mind to figure more or less out.

  8. Some devices that show movement/speed is lines, position of objects/characters, setting, and other factors that are part of showing time. Lines can be an indication of speed, falling, flying, and other motions that can occur. Usually position of characters/objects can show change that occurs and readers can determine if those changes occur in seconds, minutes, or however long. Setting or perspective can show time because us readers can see that when a character(s) is in a new location that they have moved. What I mean by factors that are part of time is clocks and the sun and moon for example. Usually we can see the difference between what day it is when it is dark or light out. Clocks obviously show time when we see the "hands" in different positions between panels. Even calendar show how much time has passed between days, weeks, months, etc..
A sequential art page can indicate change in time with the readers orientation to determined how much time has passed and panels (size, shape, overlapping..) An example of a comic that shows time change would be in the Dracula series (based on the movie). It uses basic colors to indicate the time of day it is. So of course light colors indicate daytime and darker colors are of course for later in the day. In the book called Comics and Sequential Art time is shown on pages 21-23, the moon and clocks are used to show the time between each panel.
Also on pages 34-37 we see panels are close together and thin so we feel that there is a lot happening in the story and there are moods of fear, panic, and humor as well near the end. The bigger the panels means the less intensity of what is happening in this comic.
