Ceramics 2- Mochina Culture South America

Students will discover Peruvian work in the Moche culture from 100-800 AD and the organic nature of the work which were often used as musical instruments. Students will be introduced to using molds to create a variety of handles that they will attach to their work to represent trademark aesthetic choices of this culture. White clay will be used with a monochromatic palette of reds.(and browns, perhaps textured glazes)  There can be reasons to stray from that color palette so consider all of your options by reading and looking at the four links and exploring beyond.

Students can choose to focus on
1) Goddesses/Gods/Shamans with coils/handles integrated into the design
2) Musical instruments integrating elements of animal anatomy and coils/handles

Please read the following and outline a plan and comment on how you want to proceed with your three individual pieces (you will turn in the single piece that you feel is strongest):

  1. For this project I wanted to make a duck with a handle because that was the type of work that they created in Peru during that time period. They made the pot as the duck's body and then attached the head. They also added a handle so that it would be easier to manoover around places. They could also fill it with water that they could drink. My other 2 projects are going to have the same meaning. I want to take 3 different series of ducks.

  2. I like the idea of incorporating music or musical instruments into my pieces for this project. The first article says that the importance of music and dance in Inca celebrations and festivals was very strong, so I want it to be in my work because I think it's important for that to be represented. I really like the two headed cups and pots photographed in the third article and would like to make something like them for my project.

  3. For this project I wanted to create an animal figure that doubles as an instrument. In the texts it talks about the importance of music and most of the pottery is in animal shape so I wanted to try and recreate that.
